Many people believe that happiness is a vague term that everyone is trying to comprehend. However, finding the right meaning to this term is quite impossible or at least this is what most of the people think!
They are also strongly convinced that happiness means different things to different people. So, while some believe that happiness is wealth, others say it’s love, health, family, prosperity, and the list is still way too long. However, they all agree on one thing and which is that happiness is a goal that needs to be chased and obtained.
Psychologists and neuroscientists, on the other hand, have a totally different opinion! They believe that happiness is a simple term and that’s human beings are fully aware of what makes them feel sad or happy. Therefore, happiness is about doing more of what makes you happy and satisfied and avoiding all that makes you feel the contrary.
1. SITTING ALL DAY
Let ’s admit it! It takes some strong and real motivation to get your butt off the couch, especially when it’s cold and rainy outside.
Unfortunately, most of us would sit for hours at work and spend the rest of the day tossing and turning in the sofa, munching on popcorn, and watching some good series on Netflix.
Sadly, the sedentary lifestyle has become something really ordinary and what’s even worse is that most of us get used to it and adopt it as a daily routine or habit. You might think that this is quite harmless but the truth is that it can wreak a havoc on your health and well-being.
In fact, studies show that a passive lifestyle can lead to a significant decrease in hormones responsible for happiness such as endorphins. Eventually, you will be more prone to experiencing mood swings, depression, and even anxiety.
To maintain your mental and physical health, try to go for daily walks that last about 30 minutes or hit the gym at least twice a week. This shall help you remain healthier, happier, and satisfied!
2. SPENDING ALL DAYS INDOORS
It’s always a good idea to go home after a long day at work, have a cup of tea, and just relax! But doing this on a daily basis can ruin your health and life too!
Therefore, it would be wise if you break the routine from time to time and do something new, fun, and entertaining. Don’t always go to cinemas and restaurants instead be willing to visit a new place that you have never been to before.
This will help you improve your self-esteem and make you happier. In fact, this method is referred to by psychologists as ‘’adventure therapy’’.
So, whether you decide to travel to a foreign destination or very simply decide to spend a weekend getaway at a neighboring village, the results will be the same and you will be able to notice the dramatic changes in your mood and well-being.
3. NOT PAYING ATTENTION TO THINGS AROUND YOU
Unfortunately, the majority of people tend to neglect to live their present moment and torture themselves with regrets and memories of the past or the unknown mystery of the future.
In fact, not being able to accept your present and appreciate the things you are given on this particular period of time can only exhaust your mind and body. Let ’s examine this example of two girls.
The first is doing the dishes and hating herself for doing so and hopes she was on a date enjoying dinner with her one and only in a fancy restaurant while the second is happy doing the dishes and grateful that she finally finds the time to clean her house.
The first girl is definitely emotionally tortured and unsatisfied while the second is relaxed and happy. Here, it is extremely important to understand that it’s not about enjoying the dishes but about enjoying the fact that you are able to live your present moment and enjoy it to the fullest with all its little details.
Never allow for your regrets, past memories, or even unfulfilled wishes to ruin your present. Remember that everything happens at the perfect time and place. So, don’t rush things and let them occur when they are meant to occur.
Now focus on loving and pampering yourself, travel more, and meet new people. Live your life to the fullest as the past is already over and the future is not 100% guaranteed.
4. ONLY CONSUMING
Life is about giving and receiving. So, learn to give instead of just consuming otherwise life won’t be meaningful! Surely, you are aware of the fact that no simple or small act of kindness is ever wasted!
Unfortunately, we are living in an overstimulated society where the busy schedules lead to lack of communication and where people rarely look one another in the eye.
Therefore, communication is summarized on a click of ‘’like’’ in Facebook and what’s even worse is that people are refraining from showing their love and expressing their emotions for fear of rejection.
Be the change you want to see in the world and surely if you dare to take the first step, others will follow one day. Smile on people’s faces and let their worried souls find peace and comfort, buy someone a gift without any special occasion, or very simply write a note and leave it on their desk to make them feel that you care and that you are important to them.
Above all, never underestimate how the tiniest act of kindness can cheer up the heart.
5. ISOLATING YOURSELF FROM OTHERS
No matter how hard we try, we will be always in need to feel like we belong to a certain group of people. We are not born to live alone but born to coexist peacefully with each other, to procreate, and to connect until the very last breath we take. This quality of belongings is our human nature and we cannot give up on it!
According to different studies on this matter, this quality can help us lead a happy and healthy life. It also helps us defeat some serious diseases like stress, boost our self-confidence, and improve our mood.
6. NOT BEING CREATIVE
Passive people always prefer to consume instead of creating, producing, and making a difference in the world they live in. However, what they might not know is that this passive lifestyle can lead to health and mental issues! Therefore, one should take time to understand the reason behind his/her existence!
Undoubtedly, you are born for a reason! So, make sure you learn more about yourself, abilities, hidden passions, hobbies, and everything that can help you remain immortal even after you breathe your last!
Always keep in mind that creativity is not always about being able to sing or paint. It is also about the other things that do require a unique approach such as planting some beautiful flowers, redecorating your interior design, writing inspirational books, and much more! You just need to set your wild imagination and creativity free.
