Your home is probably one of your favorite places in the world: that’s where your belongings and your most loved ones are. Oh, and your comfortable bed, let’s not forget that.
But as great as your home might be, when you are forced to spend too much time inside – whether because you are sick or because the weather forecasts indicate that a huge storm is going to hit your town over the weekend – it can quickly become really boring and psychologically wear you out.
That’s when you need to entertain yourself (and your family, if that’s the case) with fun indoor activities. When we are doing something that amuses us, time goes by so fast we don’t even notice it. That is why it is important to have hobbies that can be done while at home.
1. Playing fun online games
Regardless of your age, online games can always be an endless source of entertainment. You just have to find the right one, and there’s definitely one that you will like considering the fact that there are literally thousands of options. Many of them completely free!
Online gaming also has a strong social aspect that contributes to the enrichment of the gaming experience. This is frequently done through voice chat.
You can play with your friends and hang out while you do so, or you can play with random people and get to know them. Either way, it is a great opportunity to talk to other people while you are stuck at home.
If you don’t have a gaming console nor a computer (which is very unlikely these days), you can play mobile games on your smartphone.
2. Movies and TV Series
With the appearance of streaming services, staying on the couch has never been easier. All you have to do is lie down, grab the remote, and open the Netflix app on your TV (or whatever streaming service you subscribe).
Since the hardest part is choosing what to see, here are some of the most entertaining TV series, stand-up comedy specials, and movies you can watch on Netflix right now:
Movies: Marriage Story, Roma, Boyhood, Uncut Gems, Bird Box, The Shawshank Redemption, Goodfellas, Inception, The Irishman
TV Series: Stranger Things, BoJack Horseman, Black Mirror, Sex Education, The End of the F***ing World, Dark, When They See Us
Stand-up Comedy Specials: Dave Chappelle – The Age of Spin, Jim Jefferies – Bare, Bo Burnham – Make Happy, Chris Rock – Tamborine, Hasan Minhaj – Homecoming King, John Mulaney – Kid Gorgeous at Radio City
These recommendations alone will give you entertainment for days. They are all worth it!
3. Board games
If you are looking for a fun activity that includes the whole family, board games are the way to go! Gather your family around the living room table and get ready to play.
Some board games are incredibly fun to play. They require you to define a strategy, deeply think about each move, and some even encourage the so-called mind games.
Just be careful because often these games are very intense and people might get angry. Here are three cool ones: Monopoly, Catan, and Risk. Not only are they all extremely stimulating and challenging, but they also make you negotiate with the other players.
Make sure the entire family is prepared for a long playing session, especially if everyone decides to play Monopoly (it can take hours and hours before one person is declared the winner).
When was the last time you read a book? Regardless of your answer, reading a book is always a great choice – whether it’s on a terrace under the sun, or locked inside your house.
And don’t even dare say that you don’t like to read. You do, you just have been reading the wrong books. There are many genres to choose from and a wide variety inside each one of them. So you will most likely find something that suits your taste.
5. Date night
If you are stuck at home with your partner, that is a fantastic opportunity to have a special and romantic moment, and there are so many enjoyable things for a couple to do at home! If you have no idea about what to do, here’s how you can surprise the love of your life:
Start the afternoon with a Netflix and chill session. You can choose one of the movies we recommended earlier and prepare the sofa so you can watch it while being extra close to each other, then start preparing dinner.
It is always a good idea to cook the other person’s favorite food and create a romantic setting with candles and soft music. After dinner, it’s a spa night! Give your partner a relaxing massage with special oils. From then on, it is up to you!
6. Learn a new skill
If you don’t know what to do when you’re bored at home, learn a new skill. The best part is that you can learn anything you want.
All you need is an internet connection and in a matter of seconds, you can start learning a new language, how to code, how to knit, or how to grow vegetables in your backyard. Literally anything. How cool is that?
So stop making excuses and wasting your time scrolling through social media. Find something that interests you and start learning! If you decide to learn something that requires a long-term commitment (such as a new language, for example), try not to give up on the first stumbling block. Be persistent. You got this!
7. Play with your kids
One of the most fun things to do with kids at home is playing with them and their toys. Let the kids set all the rules and follow their lead. Allow them to be creative. They will feel important and respected while also having a great time.
