Top 6 Household Items You Should Throw Away Immediately!

Usually, we end up forgetting about certain household items that need to be replaced. After all, we have the floor to clean, the laundry to do, food to cook, and many other house chores that in our minds are more important than replacing a simple toothbrush.

But the thing is, some of these items end up accumulating a lot of dirt and germs, and guess what? They won’t stay on that specific item. They’ll end up being spread around the house and on to you, your kids, and pets!

This is why we came up with a list of some very important household items you should get rid of right now to keep your house clean so you can become the healthiest version of yourself.

So, without any further ado, let’s hop right into it!

1. Your Kitchen Sponge

Even if you own a dishwasher machine, it’s very common to also have a kitchen sponge around the kitchen sink to wash a dish or two. In any case, if we asked you how long have you had the same kitchen sponge, your answer would probably be for a long time, or maybe you don’t even remember how long you’ve had the same sponge. Don’t worry, we’re not judging you.

You and many other people tend to forget about this item that overtime accumulates a lot of germs. If you don’t want to spread salmonella all over your dishes and possibly contract a bacterial infection, please consider replacing your sponge now and then.

It’s advisable to switch sponges every week if you use them a lot. If not, every 2 weeks. You can also buy a silicone scrubber, it’s easier to clean and disinfect, and you’ll end up saving more money over time.

2. Shower Loofah

From one sponge to another, a loofah is not meant to last a lifetime. In fact, it’s not even meant to last a year! Because of the moist environment loofahs usually stay in, they tend to harbor even more bacteria. And of course, you don’t want to scrub your body with bacteria, right?

Besides that, loofahs tend to lose shape over time so that they won’t do their job correctly after a couple of months. Fortunately, they’re not expensive items, dollar stores even sell a 5 loofah pack for one dollar, which would last you about a year.

3. Pillows

Did you know that a pillow has a lifetime of two years max? After that or even before, your soft clean pillow will slowly become the house of dead skin and a lot of dust mites (alive and dead). Doesn’t sound too good right?

If you’ve had your pillow for more than 3 years, then it’s one of the things you should throw away right now to avoid a possible skin rash or some allergies.

If you don’t wash your pillow at all, then we advise you to either wash it twice a year or get a new one after six months. Because they’re not a cheap item, we strongly suggest you to start throwing them into the washing machine every once in a while.

4. Mattress

Since we’re talking about bed wear, have you ever wondered when you should buy a new mattress? A lot of stores will tell you their mattress lasts a lifetime, truth is, they won’t. The only reason why they say it is because they want to sell. So how to know when to substitute your old mattress?

Mattresses last around 8 years. But what will tell you when it’s time to buy a new mattress is not only how they look (spots, dirty, yellow) but mostly how they feel. If you don’t have a comfortable mattress, you won’t rest or sleep properly.

And for people who suffer from allergies, they might not stop sneezing because allergens and dust mites tend to accumulate on the mattress. And of course, quality usually means more money, but it also means you made a good investment that will end up saving you money in the long run.

5. Water Filter

Nowadays, everyone has a refrigerator with a water filter. It’s not as expensive as it was in the past and of course, everyone wants to drink cold, pure water, so why not spend a few extra bucks on it? The problem is, most people forget to replace the water filter.

And even though you might not taste anything different, that doesn’t mean the water is clean. It’s recommended to replace your water filter every six months, but you should check the model of your refrigerator and read the guidelines. Since you have a refrigerator with a built-in water filter, it’s probably a good idea to take advantage out of it, correct?

6. Plastic containers

Plastic containers, we bet you have loads of them in your kitchen. But how many of those are new? Probably a few, or none. Normally, plastic containers are meant to be reused, but not forever. Some people don’t understand that BPA is a chemical present in plastic that can be very harmful to our health.

Even though most containers have “BPA-free” stickers on them, it’s never too safe to use them for a long time. Thankfully, now more than ever, people are starting to use glass containers that are much safer to use. Even if heavy, they will last longer than any plastic storage containers.

A good alternative for packing your kids’ lunch is silicone containers. They come in many colors and are super light to carry around. And of course, they are much safer to use! You shouldn’t punish yourself for forgetting some of the items on this list.

After all, we’re humans, we forget about things, and we mess up sometimes, but we learn from our mistakes, and we always want to do better and better. So, now that you’re aware of what household items you need to make sure you do it right now or as soon as possible, so you don’t end up forgetting about it for another year!
